John Cadbury opened a tea and coffee shop in 1824 in Birmingham, England (UK). Cadbury eventually started selling chocolate beverages and then ventured into confectionery. John Cadbury started with only a mortal and pestle to grind his chocolate.
One hundred and 85 years later, Cadbury is no longer just the name on a sign or on the door. Now, it's an entire brand.
The fascinating story of Cadbury is one that began with a small family business. Lead by a top innovator, along with secret recipes, technical inventions, market savvy, the company developed several great brands.
The business, that was founded with a sense of great social responsibility and strong moral values, has regularly campaigned for equality, justice, social reform. Early in its history, Cadbury was even an advocate in the movement to end slavery.
Over the years, there have been numerous acquisition and demergers.
In 2003, Cadbury obtained the rights to Beeman's Gum, a product that had been discontinued in 1978. Made of pepsin powder and chicle, Beeman's Gum was originally marketed as a digestion aid. Once considered the pilots' lucky gum, Beeman's Gum is occasionally produced by Cadbury Adams as a nostalgia gum.
A Cadbury PLC subsidiary, Cadbury Adams is a strictly confectionery company with products such as breath mints, candy, gum and cough drops.
Although Cadbury Adams has its headquarters in Parsippany, New Jersey (USA), Cadbury's headquarters remains in London, England.
The manufacturing plant is located in Rockford, Illinois, where it has remained for more than 50 years. Many of the top brands are made in this facility. Hanover, New Jersey, is home to Cadbury's Science and Technology Center.
Merging and Demerging
Cadbury Schweppes purchased the Adams brand in 2003 from Pfizer and following the purchase formed Cadbury Adams.
