Beemans Gum Wrappers

When Dr. Edward Beeman invented his pepsin-flavored gum at the end of the 19th century, he marketed his new product as a remedy for indigestion. Pepsin was the first animal enzyme discovered to break down proteins during digestion. Dr. Beeman had been selling medicinal Pepsin Powder but with the innovation of the chewiness of chicle, joined together with the clean, distinct pepsin flavor, he created a taste-treat of lasting cultural significance.

The first Beemans gum wrapper (spelled "Beeman's Gum" at that time) featured an image of a pig with the slogan, "With Pepsin, You Can Eat Like A Pig." Perhaps at that time, he thought this would have an eye-catching appeal, but he soon altered the label. The pig on the wrapper was replaced by a likeness of Dr. Beeman along with his mini-essay, entitled, "I Put Pepsin Into Gum." He touted its benefits, proclaiming, "As a preventive or relief for indigestion, or all other ailments induced by indigestion, I believe my chewing gum is unexcelled."

Although Beemans Gum still tastes of pepsin, it isn't sold as a curative any more, just an old-fashioned, flavorsome gum. The wrapper is now minimally designed with the words BEEMANS CHEWING GUM in black, white, red and gold. With its limited production by Cadbury Adams, Beemans has become all-too-rare and very much appreciated whenever it's available.

Note: We haven't been able to locate an image of the original Beemans wrapper with the pig. If you have access to one, please contact us at the site. Thank you, and happy chewing.
